Abstract
Introduction: hip arthroplasty (HA) or knee arthroplasty (KA) may account for 24 % of the etiology of Ogilvie syndrome (OS), and OS is a rare complication of HA or KA. The objective of the study was to conduct a systematic review of postoperative OS in patients undergoing hip or knee surgery. Material and methods: a systematic review of published studies on patients with OS after hip or knee surgery. The search was conducted in Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. Full articles in English were selected. Presentations, conference communications, editorials, and reviews were excluded. Results: nineteen studies met the defined selection criteria. The mean age of onset of OS was 73 ± 6.7 years, and the condition was more common in males (71.4 %). The most common surgical pathology of the hip and knee was osteoarthritis (83.3 %). Lower limb surgery was performed on the hip in 75.7 % of cases. Surgery was primary in 82.1 % of cases, and revision surgery occurred in 17.9 %. In 84.2 % of cases, OS was resolved with conservative treatment, while 14.7 % required decompressive colonoscopy, and 1.4 % required surgery. During a mean follow-up of 121.2 ± 396.8 days, 9.4 % of patients died. Conclusions: OS occurs in 0.02-5.6 % of patients undergoing hip or knee surgery, with 1.4 % requiring surgical treatment.
